A welcome addition to the HO-scale model train world was COX's F-3A
unit, first offered in 1974. Cox displayed a Chessie System F-3A at the 1974 Chicago Hobby Show. This model represented
all-new tool-and-die work and was a fairly accurate example of EMD's F-3A diesel locomotive operated by a variety of the nation's
railroads.
During the life of this model under the COX name, it was available in the roadnames shown above. The model
was sold as a powered loco and no dummy version was produced by COX. The F-3A was made in Hong Kong for COX.
Prior
to 1974, COX's train line was produced for them by Athearn in California. That group of offerings had Athearn's F-7A sold
under the COX name. COX also sold Athearn's F-7B at that time. Both Athearn produced COX F-units were available in Santa Fe(61
1010) and Penn Central(61 1020).
Distributed in the Canadian market, COX had a trio of F3-A models
as seen below. The Canadian market also enjoyed the promotional Robin Hood Foods F3-A example. From what I have
found, the Robin Hood set's rolling stock made appearances in the Lesiure Dynamics catalogs in Canada, but I do not find the
Robin Hood F3-A in these listings.
Additionally, the stock numbering system for the American F3-A releases
was different in Canada. In Canada, the Burlington Northern F3-A was #611180; Chessie System F3-A was #611190; Santa
Fe F3-A was #611130; and the U.S. Army F3-A was #611160. All appear to be exactly the same otherwise, when compared
to their U.S. release examples.
